Week 34 - Final Matches
Snooker Division 1 - Holland Goes Dutch And Shares His Joy!
After 37 years in the wilderness St.Bedes brought the 1st division title back to its spiritual home. Team captain Johnny Holland and his squad had been top of the league since the opening day of the season but were pushed all the way by a stubborn Fords'A team. Johnny Holland has been playing snooker in the Widnes league for 30 years and he said 'It doesn't get any better than this!' This weeks title winning 9-0 whitewash came courtesy of former town pairs champions John Hartshorn 67-25 and Brian Kennedy 72-26 who potted the winning balls. Fords'A brave challenge fell just short after they overcame HGSC'B 8-1 in the final week. Ste O'Hare 79-30 and 'Big Break Supremo' Jimmy Jenkins 101-26 sealed yet another impressive victory for the worthy runners-up. WidnesCons'A were already assured of 3rd place prize money and this showed as they thoroughly enjoyed brushing aside SimmsX'A 8-1. Opening pairing of Callum 'Ding Junhui' Malloy 82-20 and Tony 'Get Outta My Swamp' Cook 96-24 including a 46 break sealed the win. The future looks bright for this emerging side. Overton MH enjoyed success in a high profile match against Widnes' finest Village'A 5-4. Chris Achilles was once again the pick of the bunch winning 104-28 and falling just short of the league break after missing on 91. Farnworth'A ended the year strongly with an improving, solid team winning 7-2. Dave Boswell 67-39 and John Davenport 71-43 taking the plaudits. Fords'B having secured their survival earlier than expected hammered Stobart Stadium'A 8-1. Old dog Ken Metcalfe 46-41 and young pup Mick Carew 70-29 were in a merciless mood. RAOB matched that scoreline and ended the year with flying colours. This weeks star performers were John 'Have You Any Idea How Much That Shhtings?' Ratcliffe 73-34 and Shaun Cosgrove 70-22.
Snooker Division 2 - Peter Griffin Loves The Family Guys!
With USC having already wrapped up the title race it was down to 3 teams to fight it out for the final promotion place as well as prize money. What a night it proved to be as WdnesCons'C vaulted into the 1st division after an unlikely 9-0 away win at SimmsX'B. The opening combination set the tone as Darren 'Day' Attwood 72-31, Colin 'Sooo Gay' Grindley 70-45 and captain marvellous Peter 'Family Guy' Boardman 87-30 added the icing on the cake with his performance which included a superb 46 break. Early darkhorses for 1st division honours maybe? Millbrow'B lost their grip on 3rd place thanks to other results but certainly gave their best efforts as they came home 6-3 winners. Both Danny's were exceptional as Danny 'The Magican' Magee 83-40 including a 30 break and Danny 'Stifler' Woolley 69-51 which also contained a league best 63 break pipping 2nd division big hitter Leon Hosking on the final match of the year. An unbelievable season for young danny after already claiming the pairs & division 2 handicap titles. Millbrow'A gave away their potential promotion after capitulating 8-1 against STKO winners Birchfield'C. Anthony Clarke 78-19 and John 'Go Compare' Jones 74-29 showed no mercy to their wounded victims. The Brow'A still edged out their 'B team for 3rd spot by a solitary point. Prize night venue St.Basils played host to a winning side on the last night as they came home 5-4 winners. Barry 'Penny' Lane 55-42 and Denis 'Pennis' Simcock 79-30 including a 39 break were in inspired form. Widnes Rec ended what was certainly a roller coaster and difficult season for them winning 5-4. They will now look forward to their new venue as USC'B next year. John 'Ken Barlow' Hunt 71-30 and Paul 'Willie Thorne' Antrobus 83-33 celebrated their final frames under the Widnes Rec banner with wins. Corporation'A eased past St.Josephs'B 7-2 thanks to two top 'Marksmen' in the shape of Mark Freeman 61-34 and Mark Allen 71-38. WCC'C also matched that scoreline running out 7-2 winners. After being in the top two for most of the season, this final 8-1 drubbing at the hands of fellow high flying Stobart Stadium'C ensurec they missed out on the prize places.
